Maddison Wells, a 5th Year Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Real Estate student, recently won 1st Place in the IE University’s Entrepreneurship Challenge for the category Urban Life and Urban Space. This international competition had 189 total entries.

As a result of her award, Wells was also given partial tuition to the IE University's Master’s in Business for Architecture and Design, a 15-month blended in-person and remote program that includes trips to Madrid and Amsterdam, starting in April 2021.

Below is an excerpt from Wells' winning submission to the Entrepreneurship Challenge:

“My background in architecture and real estate development gives me the advantage of knowing how to conduct the business and finances associated with development, while creating well-designed spaces. As a Black woman who comes from an impoverished urban environment, I am not only able to relate to marginalized communities, I am a member of these communities. What I contribute to addressing this problem is an understanding of both sides: the creators and the byproducts of their creations. My first steps would be to initiate the change I wish to see in my own neighborhood. I would start my own non-profit organization to initiate neighborhood improvement and beautification. Simultaneously, I would expand my personal design and development portfolio to gain more entrepreneurial experience. My work would explore how incremental housing can be implemented to increase neighborhood sustainability and communal ownership.”
